Richard Maloy reflects on his residency at the Headlands Center of the Arts

As we drive into the Presidio, heading north towards the Golden Gate Bridge, there’s a sudden drop in temperature; the sunlight vanishes and is replaced by a grey haze. As we near the bridge you can see only large orange sections of it jutting through the fog. It’s eerie to cross a bridge for the first time and be unable to see it in its entirety – or the land it connects to. We take the first right turn as the bridge ends, making our way down towards a darkened tunnel; there’s fog billowing over the tussock and grass-swept hills; we wait, then enter the one-way tunnel.
And so begins Richard’s journey as the first Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award recipient to spend 3 months at the Headlands Center of the Arts in the Marin Headlands National Park, San Francisco.
You can read more about Richard’s residency in the current issue of Art News New Zealand.
