SCAPE Passing Time artist, Anton Parsons, designed this t-shirt for the opening of the 6th SCAPE Christchurch Biennial.

SCAPE Christchurch earthquake t-shirt

The design depicts the number sequence 043504092010 (the hour, minute, day, month and year of the 4 September 2010 earthquake) which first changed the landscape of Christchurch and caused the postponement of SCAPE.

The t-shirt was produced only days before another tragic earthquake hit Christchurch on 22 February 2011.

Although the 6th SCAPE was unable to go ahead as planned on two occasions, this commemorative design will go on to represent this interrupted biennial in our fallen city.

The proceeds of the sale will go towards future SCAPE projects. SCAPE is a not-for-profit organisation and your purchase will help us to ensure the future of SCAPE.

There are only very limited numbers of these T.Shirts still available.

Sizes: XLarge or 2XLarge.

Style: Unisex

Colours: Black on white or white on black

Price: NZ$35.00 (plus postage and packaging)

Creator of Passing Time is Auckland based artist Anton Parsons, one of New Zealand’s leading sculptors.

Anton Parsons was born 1968 in Palmerston North, and currently lives and works in Auckland. He graduated from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in 1990. His work is held in public and private collections throughout New Zealand.

Anton’s practice has embraced a wide range of media and modes: industrial materials, readymade objects, photography and installation. His works engage physical space in profound, often unsettling ways through the apparently very simple means.

SCAPE has finally opened after nine months of re-thinking and re-scheduling due to the Christchurch earthquakes. It is not  just a celebration of new art for Christchurch, but a celebration of the fortitude and persistence of the artists, their partners in industry and the SCAPE team.

“The SCAPE team have finally thwarted the earthquakes to launch our artworks. The artists have created works which may give Christchurch people a new perspective on the future development of our city,” says Director of SCAPE, Deborah McCormick

Passing Time by Anton Parsons is almost installed, watch the video below to see how the foundations were installed.

Passing Time is located on Wilson Reserve, at the High Street entrance to the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) and will be dedicated as part of a public parade in the city on Saturday 5 March.

The sculpture is a gift to the city from the Christchurch City Council, CPIT and the CPIT Foundation (which provides support for enterprising projects). Passing Time was chosen by a commissioning group including representatives of CPIT and members of the Christchurch City Council’s Public Art Advisory Group, which was formed to advocate and encourage the commissioning of public works of art. The new work continues the linked route of public sculptures that starts in Cathedral Square with the Chalice (2000) and takes in Flour Power (Stewart Plaza, 2008) and Nucleus (corner of Lichfield, High and Manchester Streets, 2006) on its way to CPIT.
